Think Hurricane Season Has a Start and End Date? Think Again.

Jul 15, 2025

When it comes to hurricanes, the calendar doesn’t always matter. While the official Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1st to November 30th, storms can and do form outside of those dates, sometimes well before the season begins or long after it ends. For Florida homeownersand business owners, that means year-round preparation is not just smart, it’s necessary.

Record-Breaking Hurricanes

  • Earliest Atlantic Cyclone: The first named storm ever recorded before the official start of hurricane season was Tropical Storm Ana, which formed on May 8th, 2015. This remindsus that May storms, while rare, can still do serious damage.
  • Latest Hurricane on Record: Meanwhile, the latest hurricane-strength storm in Atlantic history was Hurricane Alice, which formed on December 30, 1954, and became a hurricane on December 31st.

These “out-of-season” storms aren’t common, but they’re not anomalies either. In fact, pre-season storms occur roughly every 4–5 years, according to historical data. In today’s environmental climate, with warmer sea surface temperatures and rapid storm intensification trends, experts caution that off-season storms may become more common.

Why This Matters

Too often, people don’t think about hurricane preparation until June rolls around, or even later. But history tells us that the danger doesn’t always wait for the calendar. Oftentimes, hurricanes do not follow a “typical” path or season timeline. With storm behavior changing and hurricanes forming earlier, lasting longer, and intensifying more quickly, year-round awareness is the new reality.
