When a storm is on the horizon, a little preparation can go a long way toward protecting your home or business, and your ability to recover financially if damage occurs. At Insurance Litigation Group (ILG), our experienced property insurance attorneys have seen firsthand how small proactive steps can make a big difference when it comes to insurance claims. These quick, practical tips can help you stay ready before the next major storm or hurricane.
Take clear photos and videos of your home, inside and out, before a storm hits. Capture ceilings, windows, doors, and the building exterior. A full walkthrough video works best, especially if your claim ever goes to court, as it shows the pre-storm condition of your property. Remember to tidy your space and remove personal belongings before filming so the focus stays on the structure and fixtures.
Store your insurance company’s contact information in your phone. In your notes, include your policy number, coverage type, and inception and expiration dates. Having this handy helps you act fast if you need to file a claim, and prevents delays when time matters most.
This simple trick can help you determine whether your food is safe to eat after a power outage. Before a storm, freeze a small cup of water. Once it’s solid, place a penny on top and keep it in your freezer. After the storm, check the penny. If it’s sunk to the bottom, your freezer has likely lost power, still near the top, your food probably stayed frozen.
